I used to sell newspapers, stack shelves and admin the hell out of fence construction. A little detour into education resulted in a 12-year career in data analysis, a teaching qualification and a passion for helping others excel in, you guessed it...! Read on, if you want to find out a little more about the person behind The Blue Star Academy!
So, hey! I'm Rachel and throughout my proper grown-up career, I've been known as the Excel Queen.
The funny thing about that moniker is that I actually kind of hated it! Whenever anyone would say it to me I'd die a little, mostly of embarrassment, but also because being associated with something as geeky as Microsoft Excel was not going to do my street cred any favours!
But in hindsight, being thought of as the Excel Queen across an organisation of over 1300 employees was quite a compliment! It's only now when I think back at every time I visibly cringed and asked a colleague to not call me that damn name, how I should have just owned it!
So, I suppose now, I have that opportunity! Head to my Instagram and you'll see it proudly displayed on my profile (give me a follow while you're there!), crown and all!
And, it is something to be celebrated. Learning Microsoft Excel legitimately changed my life, progressed my career and skyrocketed my confidence. It's both taken me out of my comfort zone and become that familiar go-to business tool; dependable, loyal and always there when I need it!
If I'm being overly sentimental about it I owe a lot to those teeny little rectangles of joy and right now, nerding out over them on a full-time basis is basically what I live for (amongst other things of course!)
Now, if you've made it this far through my first ever blog post, you either know me and are being a bit nosy (which is cool btw!) or are familiar with The Blue Star Academy and what I do. Perhaps you are already a fellow Microsoft Excel enthusiast, or even just starting your journey on the old spreadsheet express.
No matter who you are (or why you are here!) it's my literal job now to help you achieve your Microsoft Excel goals, and I couldn't be more excited to get started!

So, let's tell you a little bit about me - part 1!
You know my name is Rachel, but you probably don't know the following about me:
I've had 2 boxing fights (think white collar), won both and so, therefore, retired undefeated!
I used to play the trumpet in a Big Band - smashed out a few solos in my time!
I have a degree in Design: Illustration - which is basically just drawing things!
Right now, my biggest loves (apart from Microsoft Excel and the other half) are...
My career path has been a random one, supplemented with a stint at Art College (hence the degree) and an almost obsessive compulsion to always be learning. My 'Got a course? Sign me up!' attitude helped me grow in confidence and develop the skills I needed to work my way up from cleaner to a business owner. Blimey, that does sound a bit cliche but it's true!
My proudest achievement was when I graduated with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Two years of study, balancing a full-time job, regular teaching commitments and all the usual personal stuff, was hard work but I did it!
Current course? Mental Health Awareness - a little off topic but as a side hustle I deliver First Aid training. Mental Health First Aid and Awareness are two courses I am hoping to add to my teaching portfolio in 2022!
And Finally... Here are my currents...
TV Show - The Witcher, for obvious reasons (right)
Music - Biffy Clyro - The Myth of the Happily Ever After (Mon the Biff!)
Book - War Lord - Bernard Cornwell (If would appear I am a big fan of men who can swing a sword in a pretty epic manner - Yes I truly am a nerd!)
Function - XLOOKUP because VLOOKUP is so last season!
